Welcome!

Greetings!  Welcome to our class blog.  As you already know, I am Mr. Palumbo, your English Teacher and the moderator of this blog.  I hope you are as excited to try this forum out as I am.

Over this Summer, I got the chance to read three books: One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, a sprawling novel about seven generations of one family and their history in a small mountain town in Colombia; Paradise Lost by John Milton, an Epic Poem written in England in the mid 17th Century (1600s) dealing with the battle between Satan and his angels against God and his angels, and how Satan tries to get revenge against God by corrupting God's new creations, Adam and Eve; On the Ropes, by Tom Schreck, a book about a Social Worker/Boxer who becomes a private detective while trying to find out who murdered one of his clients.  Tom Schreck is an old friend of mine from my college days in Albany.

While I normally read many more books over the course of the summer, this summer I spent a great deal of time watching classic Westerns, reading magazines, short stories, and many different kinds of blogs.

Now, I'd like to know what you read this summer; you do remember you were supposed to read at least two books this summer, right?  Part of developing a community of readers is the ability to describe and recommend books to our peers so that they may enjoy a book that you have liked.
Here is what you need to do:
1. Who are you? Introduce yourself (be sure to give your full name).
2. List the titles and the authors of the books you read for summer reading.
3. Please provide a brief recommendation for one of the books.

I hope that you all find at least one new book to read based on your classmates' recommendations.
This assignment is due by 9PM on Sunday, September 12th.
Good luck in 10th grade!

  1. Hi my name is Gabriella Marrese. Over the summer I read "Along for the Ride" by Sarah Dessen and "The Guardian" by Nicolas Sparks. "Along for the Ride" was a really cute story about not judging people for what you see them as. But the book i would reccomend is "The Guardian." It had everything. It was a murder mystery, a love story, and really built up suspense. The book takes so many twists and turns that your sometimes not sure whats happening and when its explained you are in shock. I think everyone would enjoy this book.

  2. Hi my name is Noella Alessandro. I read two books for the tenth grade summer reading assignment. One of them was "The last song" by Nicholas Sparks and my other choice was "Stealing Heaven" by Elizabeth Scott. I would recommend "Stealing Heaven" instead of "The Last Song" because it's such a quick read. Elizabeth Scott makes you want to keep reading to find out what happens next. I think girls would enjoy it more though, because it's kind of a romantic mystery about a girl trying to find who she really is.

  3. Hi my name is Hamlet Perez. I read the book "Monster" by Walter Dean Myers and "Eleventh Grade Burns" by Heather Brewer. I really enjoyed reading both books but i strongly recommend reading "Eleventh Grade Burns" it is a series, it is book four of five. It is very interesting and it keeps you thinking what will happen next, there is lot of action in the book and it rarely gets boring.

  4. Hello my name is Shirley Aguilar.Over this summer i read two books; the first one was "Go Ask Alice" by Anonymous and "Sold" by Patricia McCormick. "Go Ask Alice" was more captivating to me because it was a lot more interesting than i expected. The setting was in the late 1960's and early 1970's, approximately. What was extremely unique about the book is that it is all told through journal entries of an unindentified teenage girl and it's not fictional! In this unamed girl's diary she expresses her daily problems, experiences and her most prescious secrets. It all starts in her summer vacation. She gets invited to Jill's party, an old classmate from back where she used to live. There the innocent diarist was tricked into drinking LSD, which she thought was simply a bottle of coke. In her diary she begins explaining about her first drug encounter, the amazing feeling it brought to her. Drugs were pleasurable trips to her. By the end of the summer she was hooked! She became a complete addict, trapped into the world of drugs, sex and alcohol. This type of life obviously brought very negative consequences to her life. She became distant to her caring family. She foolishly altered her warm confortable home and bed for sleepless nights on the streets and hiding from the police at all times. As a result, she ended up commtting suicide. As you can see this book is definitely recommendable, you start and than you just can't stop reading. Actually, both books i would recommend to everyone. Each book tells you about the point of view from two teenage girls with a complete different sitution, background, enivornment and the things they go through. In "Go Ask Alice", the ending is sad, but in "Sold", one learns that you hold the key to a successful future, you just need to work hard and strive for the best no matter how many obsticles come across your way.

  5. Hello my name is Dylan Conway. The book that I read over the summer was, ''Jurassic Park'' by Michael Crichton. A science fiction, which will bring the reader into a whole new world. Where dinosaurs have been brought back to life! It's a very intense and interesting novel. I would recommend this book, because it is not a boring book. It also has a lot of suspense throughout the entire story.

  7. Hi my name is Aidan McCarthy and the two books I read over the summer were, The Return of the King by J.R.R. Tolkein and Lord of the Flies by William Golfing. the Return of the king is about people in a land called Middle Earth have to destroy an evil ring before the creator of that ring finds the ring and takes over Middle earth. Lord of the Flies is about a few English boys who find themselves stranded on a remote island and have to fight for survival. I would recommend both of these books to anyone who wants a good adventure book. Lord of the Flies can get a little bit boring sometimes but it's worth it. Both books tell you to trust your friends because sometimes they are all you have.
